6 Reasons Family Time is More Important Than You Think

Through thick and thin, family is always there. It is the one constant in life on which we can depend. Spending time together as a family is more important than you think. Families living around Idaho Falls and in the South East Idaho region have a multitude of opportunities to spend time together outdoors. Our hunting, fishing, boating lifestyles give us a lot of ways to spend time together.

I know finding that extra time in the day can be challenging; we are all very busy. But this is not impossible and it is very important to make it happen. Spending time together as a family has been proven to improve a child’s academic success and helps shape their behavioral outcome.

Six years of research compiled by scientists at the University Of California proves that loneliness has a direct correlation with death. The study focused on 1600 elderly participants. It revealed that of the seniors who died, 14% had regular visitors. In contrast, 23% had zero family or friends who came by to see them.

In general, elderly persons are more likely than young ones to place importance on relationships. They are also more tolerant of faults in their family members because they do not like being alone so are able to see past faults. They also have the experience of their own faults and use that as a basis of understanding.

Benefits of spending time with family can be endless. Here are 6 more reasons:

  1. Builds Self Esteem

A child will learn how smart and talented and strong he is because of what he is told and how people behave around him. A daughter learns just how loving and kind she is when she is praised for her kind actions. Kids with higher self esteem build stronger relationships themselves later in life.

  2. Creates Bonds

Like we said before, family is everything. When life gets difficult and friends and acquaintances fall through, family will be there to hold it all together.  It is this bond that we display to children that teaches them how to continue to build strong bonds among the people they grow up around.

  3. Nurtures Positive Behaviors

Being around family shows everyone in the family that they are ok and that whomever they are is who the rest of the family loves. This means there is no reason for anyone to feel the need to lie about who they are. The behavioral traits that exude from a truthful person are more positive than those that come from untruthfulness. Being together as a family nurtures honesty and positive behaviors.

  4. Creates Memories

Everyone is going to have childhood memories. Which memories do you want to stick though? The time everyone was fighting and went their separate ways, or the time when everyone was out on their boat at the lake having a good time? Childhood memories are a powerful variable in who a child grows up to be.

  5. Healthy Lifestyle

Sometimes being around family helps us lift each other up and encourage one another to make healthy decisions. Loneliness is a huge factor for individuals making bad decisions. Families that eat together tend to eat healthier than those that eat separately.

  6. Stress Relief

Spending time together as a family is an incredibly huge way to relieve stress. I know families can fight. I know siblings can bicker. But at the end of the day, everyone knows that they are a part of the bigger picture; that everyone in the family is family. After a long day at school a child wants to just hang out with his/her siblings and parents. It is the stress relief they need. School wasn’t easy for you and it’s not easy for them. Go out and play together. It will lower the stress of everyone in the household. Family is family. It will always be important.
