We can't depend entirely on cell phones for communication especially out in the backcountry. When groups of people travel together, whether it be a 4 wheeling or side by side trip, snowmobiling, fishing, hunting, or even just a hike, communication has to be dependable.

Cell phones can lose service in some areas, the battery is notorious for dying at inopportune times, and if you're out doing something like snowmobiling or other extreme sports, the screen on your phone is likely to break so you want to keep it secure somewhere safe.

Don't fool yourself into thinking that your cell phones are satisfactory for communication. You need backcountry radios. Not just to be able to find your buddies, talk about where you're headed next, but for safety! If you fall or crash and you can't get to where you stashed your phone, your radio will be attached to you.

I’m clearly a big advocate of using 2-way radios for communication while backcountry snowmobiling, especially in avalanche terrain. Here is the one I recommend and why:

BC LINK™ TWO-WAY RADIO 2.0

The BC Link™ Two-Way Radio 2.0 is the next generation radio with 2 Watts of power for increased usable range. Smart Mic grill is impervious to packing with snow. On/off/channel selection dial switch is protected from inadvertent channel changing.  Comes with long-lasting built-in rechargeable lithium-ion battery, durable cord/base unit, and new battery percentage power display. Integrates into all Float avalanche airbag and Stash backpacks.

Find separated friends, communicate plans, stick your line and share observations in real-time with the BC Link group communication system. The Smart Mic user interface is located at your fingertips: to change settings, no need to dig the radio from your pack. Battery lasts for several days without recharging, even in cold temps. The Link 2.0 improves on our current system, with more power, more durability, and more weather resistance.

Precision Boats in Idaho Falls is stocked with everything you need for snowmobiling and avalanche safety equipment. We choose to stock the BCA Link 2.0 radios because we've done the research and found these not only have the longest lasting battery, are durable, and make our friends and family the safest, but they're also affordable.
